Worship is a central theme in scripture, but the New Testament defines it in a different way. From the Gospel accounts to the epistles, almost everyone talks about God’s kindness in redeeming man from the grip of sin and the devil. Here are some worship scriptures that underscore what true New Testament worship means.

They sang a new song, saying, “You are worthy to take the book and to open its seals: for you were killed, and bought us for God with your blood out of every tribe, language, people, and nation, and made us kings and priests to our God, and we will reign on the earth.” I saw, and I heard something like a voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders. The number of them was ten thousands of ten thousands, and thousands of thousands; saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who has been killed to receive the power, wealth, wisdom, strength, honor, glory, and blessing!” I heard every created thing which is in heaven, on the earth, under the earth, on the sea, and everything in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb be the blessing, the honor, the glory, and the dominion, forever and ever! Amen!” The four living creatures said, “Amen!” Then the elders fell down and worshiped. (Revelation 5:9-14)

For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. (Philippians 3:3)

Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour comes, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, will you worship the Father. You worship that which you don’t know. We worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such to be his worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:21-24)

Through him, then, let’s offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of lips which proclaim allegiance to his name. (Hebrews 13:15)

The four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within. They have no rest day and night, saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come!” When the living creatures give glory, honor, and thanks to him who sits on the throne, to him who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives forever and ever, and throw their crowns before the throne, saying, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, the Holy One, to receive the glory, the honor, and the power, for you created all things, and because of your desire they existed, and were created!” (Revelation 4:8-11)

In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you. (I Thessalonians 5:18)

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord. (Colossians 3:16)

Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God, and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men.” (Luke 2:13-14)

But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were loosened. (Acts 16:25-26)

Giving thanks to the Father, who made us fit to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light, who delivered us out of the power of darkness, and translated us into the Kingdom of the Son of his love. (Colossians 1:12-13)

After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude, which no man could count, out of every nation and of all tribes, peoples, and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, dressed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands. They cried with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation be to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” All the angels were standing around the throne, the elders, and the four living creatures; and they fell on their faces before his throne, and worshiped God, saying, “Amen! Blessing, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honor, power, and might, be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” (Revelation 7:9-12)

Speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; giving thanks always concerning all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God, even the Father. (Ephesians 5:19-20)

How the Bible Expects Us to Worship

Praise and worship scriptures

The Bible is clear in John 4:23-24 that we, as believers, should worship God in spirit and truth. That is the kind of worship God expects from us. The same verse further reminds us that God wants people who will worship him authentically and sincerely, not as a mere show-off.

Psalm 95:6-7 instructs that we bow when worshipping God:

Oh come, let’s worship and bow down. Let’s kneel before Yahweh, our Maker, for he is our God. We are the people of his pasture, and the sheep in his care. Today, oh that you would hear his voice! (Psalm 95:6-7)

This humble act of kneeling, highlighted in the scripture on worship above, communicates a deep level of reverence and devotion to the Lord. Even in the Bible, we see that bowing and kneeling were the common postures of the early servants of God.

For instance, we find Moses and Aaron falling on their faces before the Lord, and His glory surrounds them. Again, in Ezekiel 11:13-14, the Prophet Ezekiel fell facedown, crying before God, and God answered him.

These are wonderful examples worthy of emulation.

But while these physical expressions of worship are good and recommended, it is important to check the posture of our hearts as well. Romans 12:1 reminds us that our spiritual sacrifice must involve presenting ourselves to God fully and not just through our words or music.

So, as you worship the Lord with the Bible verses about worship above, strive to do it with the right posture of heart and motive.

Prayer for Worship

Heavenly Father, I stand before You today with a heart full of gratitude. I lift my voice to give You the heartfelt praise that is rightfully Yours. I bless Your name because You are the one true God and are worthy to be praised. Every day, I will sing a new song of praise because Your mercies are new every morning. Lord, thank You for Your countless blessings and generous provision for all my needs. I am grateful for the priceless gift of salvation and all I have in Christ Jesus.

Even if I had 10,000 tongues, it would still not be enough to express the kind of worship You deserve. But accept today, my worship offering, as I bow in reverence before You. Thank You, Father, for Your continuous mercy and favor.

I love you forever. Amen.
